The "Unfolding Estate" series furthers Pica's ongoing connection to her dowry chest treasures. Pica paints some of the Transylvanian imagery and symbols appearing on the folk art and icons contained in her dowry chest. However, the ones she chooses - for example, sun and tree-of-life symbols - carry universal meaning that often represent the intrinsic hopefulness of a “hope chest.” Such heirlooms chosen from her dowry chest represent the transience of life in contrast with the permanence of tradition. They effectively form a time capsule carried through life’s journey and now through her painting.
